Join Laura Wong of BORO BORO for an afternoon of mending, making, and textile exploration in a beautiful garden setting in Mt. Washington, Los Angeles.
In this hands-on workshop, you'll transform selvedge denim, scrap leather, and vintage Japanese indigo fabric scraps, all provided by BORO BORO, into your own one-of-a-kind tote. Inspired by the Japanese traditions of boro patchwork and sashiko stitching, we'll explore the beauty of repair, reuse, and visible mending while creating something practical to take home.
We'll begin with a brief introduction to the history and traditions of Japanese textiles, including boro patchwork and sashiko. Laura will then guide you through basic patching and sashiko stitching techniques as you design and customize your own denim tote, experimenting with vintage and repurposed materials and adding your own personal touches through stitching, layering, and patchwork.
No previous sewing experience is necessary, just bring your curiosity and a willingness to stitch!
Each participant will take home:
Your own handmade, customized upcycled denim tote bag
Vintage and repurposed textile materials to work with during the workshop
A basic sashiko/sewing kit to continue mending and stitching at home
Light lunch and refreshments will be provided, giving us time to pause, share a meal, and enjoy the garden together.
Come spend an afternoon slowing down, learning about textile traditions, and making something by hand, stitching, mending, eating, and gathering together in the garden.
About the Instructor
Laura Wong is the founder of BORO BORO, a textile practice born from her lifelong love of Japanese textiles and kimono. She has studied Japanese textiles and kimono for over 20 years, including time spent in Japan researching contemporary kimono culture and the textile traditions of Okinawa and Hokkaido. Laura is a licensed kimono dresser and sensei through the Yamano Beauty College and currently works as a fabric buyer for film and television costumes, where she researches and sources unique fabrics and materials from around the globe. BORO BORO brings together her deep knowledge of Japanese textiles, passion for vintage materials, and love of creative reuse.
